Sight Unseen

Sometimes things appear in reverse of how you think they should, the opposite of what is happening is perceived reality. I went to the “Sight Unseen” art exhibit tonight at SHOW ROOM Gowanus in Brooklyn and the performing artist, Lee Ranaldo, made me think and feel with mirrored reflection. The show started off with free flowing images of nature –trees blowing in the wind – projected onto adjoining painted white brick walls. The corner was where the screen split and on either side was a mirror image – or so it seemed. From where I was standing, my perception was that the images on the right were slightly larger, thus making it not exactly like the opposite side even though they appeared the same.

Simultaneously the artist put on a live music show that was far from traditional. He used a bow to play his electric guitar strings and also to strum it as a drum. He suspended his guitar from the ceiling and spun it around and around exhibiting his sense of freedom. All the while music was booming through the room vibrating through your body. The experience was stimulating because it reaffirmed my belief that things are not always as they seem. Just because things feel exactly the same does not mean they are – an inch on a screen can change a perception.

I love art because it allows me to interpret what I see in my own way. No one is telling me what is right or wrong or how it is supposed to be. It is just me and my experience. I encourage you to look for the reverse and expand your perceptions.
