Reward Lies In The Uncomfortable

As I’m walking to a birthday party for a lady I had met only once before, I was a little nervous yet excited to submerge myself into an experience.  An experience where I would meet new people and make new friends.

Upon my arrival, I wished my friend Amber a Happy Birthday.  She was ecstatic that I came out for her birthday, especially considering we had only spoken for all of 5 minutes the first time we met.  Being the saint she was, she introduced me to all of her friends.

One of her friends, Tim, and I started to vibe out particularly.  He was in the same position as me-had met Amber once prior at one of his shows and was now here celebrating at her party.  As the night went on, we moved the party to a hotel down the street where everyone continued to drink and socialize.

At this point, Tim and I were enjoying our cranberry vodkas at the bar, talking music theory, strange chords, and traveling.  He asked me what I played-”So what do you play?”  I replied, “Everything, but guitar is my main instrument.”  Tim also said he was a guitar player but switched to the piano and suggested I do the same if I wanted to make money through studio work.  I responded confidently, “…yeah, but I’m the next guitar God.”

The look on Tim’s face was priceless but he believed me.  I told him I would send some of my music to show him but he said, “that’s okay man, I can already tell.”  About 15 minutes later, he comes up to me saying, “The Beach Boys are gonna do a show at this hotel in the future when I’m back from L.A..  You’re gonna open for us.”

Tim is the keyboardists for The Beach Boys.  I knew going into the night that something magical was going to happen.  I just needed to allow myself to be a part of it.  Even though I had to put myself out there in a situation that would make most people uncomfortable, it was worth it.  Time and time again, people are rewarded when they allow themselves to let go, be present, and take in the positive from every and any situation presented to them.
