10 of the Greatest Songs for Today

Decided to have a little fun on a snow day like today.
In my honest opinion, most art forms are on a downward swing, if not already almost non-existent.  By this I don’t mean that new music doesn’t cease to exist…it does.  What I simply mean is the quality of the arts, and in this case music, has become such fodder.

There was a time a few years ago that I could go on a ticket selling website and find at least 4-5 music acts i would love to check out.  Let alone in the 60s and 70s when mega bands like Floyd, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Tull, and The Eagles(just to name some offhand) were touring and finding a weekend when a big band wasn’t coming through was harder to find than the reason Justin Bieber had any success(Oh yea that’s right!  He was just a marketing puppet put through the ringer)  Nowadays it becomes harder and harder to find anything with substance.

It seems the only bands that become successful don’t necessarily need to rely on any musical talent or ability, but rather the backroom staff on hand monetizing them.  Well I guess in my cynical old age of 28, that’s how the world is right now.  Could say the same about politicians and their cabinets.  The politician we see is only the figurehead of all his staff combined.  Yet somehow, he gets all the credit.  My favorite though is when a politician is being prosecuted and they lay the scapegoat on the backroom staff…”Were those your offensive words to that minority group Mr. Politician?” “No those were not my words.  Someone on staff wrote the speech and handed it to me.”

I digress, what’s this have to do with music?  Everything.  You see it all too much when a new band has talent and direction…they sign with a big record label(and honestly who could blame a big pay-day hey hey hey) and before you know it, the band sounds like every other band out there.  They’re told by the record company what they need to sound like to sell X amount of albums.  In turn, the record label makes back 100 fold what they exploited and over exposed and thus destroying any creative process the band relied upon for initial success.

So in honor, we are having a countdown of the 10 greatest songs just for the day.  You gotta get em on your listening devices people!

In no particular order:

  • 10. Kim Carnes-Bette Davis Eyes
Gotta love it.  I was recently reacquainted with this song and can’t stop listening to it.
  • 9. College(Feat. Electric Youth)-A Real Hero
Watch the movie Drive and you’ll see what I mean.
  • 8. Desire-Under Your Spell
    Another synth pop gem
  • 7. The Waterboys-Sweet Thing
    Savor it.
  • 6.White Fence-Stranger Things Have Happened
From one of the most peculiar albums, but one of the hippest
  • 5. Van Morrison-And It Stoned Me
Must say the first time I heard this song, it stoned me…then again my psychedelic state may or may not have had something to do with it.
  • 4. Travis-Turn
Saw this song on Later with Jools Holland and fell in love with it.
  • 3. Teddybears-Punkrocker
Featuring Iggy Pop, this song was a standard on my gym playlist for years.
  • 2. Tears For Fears-Who Killed Tangerine
When you think it’s all over, it’s not over…if you know what I mean.
  • 1. Pink Floyd-Fearless

I had to add at least one Pink Floyd song now didn’t I.  As I said..no particular order.
